Anzac Day Dawn Service Returns to The Conculate in 2022

DENPASAR, kanalbali.com – The Australian Consulate-General in Bali, along with Defence personnel from the Australian Embassy and the New Zealand Embassy, held a dawn service this morning to commemorate ANZAC Day. The Consulate-General is very pleased to be able to hold this ANZAC Day service, for the first time since the pandemic and reconnect in person with our Australian and New Zealand community in Bali to mark this important commemoration.

The 25th of April, ANZAC Day, is one of Australia’s most important national occasions. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.

This service commemorates the sacrifice of those Australian and New Zealand servicemen who formed part of the allied expedition that set out to capture Turkey’s Gallipoli peninsula in 1915. These servicemen became known as the ANZACs, and although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives, actions by the ANZACs during the campaign left a powerful legacy for Australia and New Zealand.

Today, ANZAC Day has evolved to honour and remember all Australian and New Zealander men and women who have served in wars, conflicts and peace-making operations. Rosemary is traditionally worn on ANZAC Day as a sign of remembrance, as it can be found growing on the Gallipoli peninsula.

Australia’s Consul-General, Anthea Griffin, New Zealand’s Counsellor for Development, Tara D’sousa, Australian Airforce Attaché, Group Captain Ken Bowes and the UK Consul, John Makin laid wreaths in memory of the ANZAC sacrifice and representatives from Australia’s and New Zealand’s veteran community led the flag raising ceremony.

This service following COVID-19 protocols and was also attended by representatives of the Bali Provincial Government, Kodam IX Udayana, Lanud Ngurah Rai, Dan Lanal Banyuwangi, Polda Bali, Badung and the Denpasar Government, as well as more than 100 Australians and New Zealanders in Bali.
