UBUD, kanalbali.id – Seniman dan produser film yang berbasis di Basel, Swiss, Michael Schindhelm, bakal menggelar pemutaran film “ROOTS” yang berkisah tentang Walter Spies, perupa Jerman yang sempat tinggal di Bali pada masa kolonial. 

Alih-alih memberikan puja-puji, film ini melihat warisan Spies secara kritis dengan melihat dampaknya pada situasi Bali hari ini.  “Sebagai daerah destinasi wisata lainnya di dunia, Bali menghadapi masalah over tourism dan berbagai tantangan lainnya,” sebutnya.

Dalam proses pembuatan film bergenre fiksi dokumenter itu, Spies dihadirkan sebagai “hantu” yang datang kembali ke Bali untuk melihat kondisi saat ini dan berbagai situs yang terkait dengan dirinya.

Seperti Vila di Iseh yang ditinggalinya di masa lalu dan masih ada hingga saat ini. Kemudian, ada juga bekas penjara Pekambingan di Jalan Diponegoro Denpasar yang sempat menjadi pusat perbelanjaan namun kini telah ditutup.

Di masa lalu, Spies sempat juga merasakan beberapa hari ditahan di tempat itu. Namun kisah kelamnya lebih terkait dengan penggunaannya sebagai tempat bagi para tahanan politik setelah tragedi di tahun 1965.

Bagi Michael, alasan pembuatan film ini antara lain karena  Spies kenyataannya ia hampir terlupakan dalam sejarah seni Barat. Namun, di pulau ini masih banyak orang masih mengingatnya hingga saat ini.

Para seniman menjadikan gaya realisme magisnya sebagai model, sebagai penari dan koreografer Spies berperan dalam pengembangan tari lokal yang mungkin paling populer yakni kecak.

Bagi para kolektor serta pemilik galeri menghormati dirinya atas inisiatif terbentuknya Pita Maha, yaitu pendirian koperasi seniman independen untuk mengekang pengaruh komersial pedagang seni Barat pada tahun 1930-an dan 1940-an.

Yang mengherankan, ketika sebuah karya Walter Spies masuk ke pasar – seperti yang terjadi baru-baru ini, di sebuah lelang di Singapura – harganya sangat mengejutkan sampai bisa mencapai tujuh digit.

Ketika ia mulai meneliti Spies sekitar enam tahun lalu, ia segera menyadari perlunya  bantuan seniman Bali untuk memahami dan menceritakan kisah tersebut.

Kemudian dia bertemu dengan  Agung Rai, yang mengetuai Walter Spies Society di Bali.

Peran Agung Rai dalam Film ROOTS

Agung Rai memperkenalkan dan memfasilitasi dengan jaringan orang-orang yang berkecimpung di sektor budaya di Ubud dan tempat-tempat lain di Bali. Saya mengenal I Wayan Dibia, salah satu siswa terakhir Limbak, yang dianggap sebagai salah satu peneliti budaya, penari, dan koreografer terpenting di Bali, dan yang menciptakan tari topeng tentang Walter Spies sepuluh tahun lalu.

Dalam karya Dibia, orang Bali menarikan karakter Spies, Chaplin, dan Margaret Mead: orang Barat, dihadirkan dalam bentuk fisik dan komunikasi gestur mereka, sebagaimana terlihat melalui lensa orang lokal.

Dua seniman muda Made Bayak dan Gus Darkm kemudian diajaknya  mengeksplorasi kisah Spies dan dampaknya terhadap masyarakat Bali saat ini.

“Dengan melakukan itu, kami telah menemukan sisi terang dan gelap dari warisan budaya bersama, yang dicirikan oleh budaya asli yang unik dan berkembang secara dinamis serta pariwisata massal, polusi, dan urbanisasi,” katanya.

Selain pemutaran film di sejumlah lokasi, event yang digelar serangkaian peringatan 100 tahun Walter Spies di Bali ini juga disertai dengan pameran seni rupa dan instalasi di Museum ARMA, Ubud antara tanggal 24 Mei hingga 14 Juni. ( kanalbali/RFH )
