Elephant found dead in Bali river

GIANYAR, kanalbali.id – A big elephant has been found dead in a river in Gianyar, Bali on Tuesday (17/12/2024). The elephant has swept away by the river current on Monday afternoon.

The video on the elephant that swept away by a strong river current went viral on social media on Monday. Taken by a local resident, the video show a strong current of the river but failed to record the elephant.

The man behind the camera told people that he saw an elephant swept away in the river.

The elephant was apparently part of the Bali Zoo, a popular zoological park in Bali.

In an official statement on Tuesday, Bali Zoo confirmed that the elephant found dead in the river was their. The 45 years elephant called Molly.

Emma Chandra, Public Relations of Bali Zoo said, “The entire team at Bali Zoo is deeply saddened by the loss of Molly, a female elephant who has been an important part of our extended family. Molly was known as a kind and friendly elephant”

“This incident was very difficult to be avoid, but we are committed to conducting a thorough evaluation of our operational procedures and risk mitigation measures, especially during the rainy season, to ensure the safety of all our animals in the future,” Emma added.

It is known that Molly has been swept away by a strong river caused by a heavy rain on Monday afternoon at around 3.30 p.m. Central Indonesia Time (WITA).

When the incident happened, Molly was taken by her mahout to go back to holding area after doing ‘a routine socialization’.  As part of the Zoo’s daily care, elephant was given time to explore the environment, and get mental and physical stimulation to maintain their well-being.

The route to the holding area passes through a river that usually has a calm current.

However heavy rain that occurred on Monday has caused very strong current in the river. Molly apparently lost her balance and was swept away by the current.

The Bali Zoo team immediately conducted searching operation after the incident. The Bali Zoo has also reported the incident to the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) and Gianyar Mitigation Disaster Agency (BPBD Gianyar).
