GIANYAR, kanalbali.id – Petani diajak untuk mulai mengolah produksi kelapa yang dihasilkan menjadi Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) atau minyak kelapa murni. Upaya ini diharapkan dapat meningkatkan nilai ekonomi produk olahan kelapa yang dihasilkan petani, karena selama ini produksi minyak kelapa hanya dilakukan secara konvensional yang dikenal dengan minyak tandusan.

Inovasi mengolah kelapa menjadi VCO merupakan cara inovatif dalam mengoptimalkan pemanfaatkan produk kelapa. VCO yang dihasilkan nantinya dapat menjadi souvenir yang dapat dibawa oleh wisatawan kembali ke negaranya.

“Jika diolah dalam bentuk VCO tentu akan disukai oleh berbagai kalangan, terutama para wisatawan di Bali. Apalagi VCO selama ini dikenal sebagai tanaman beragam manfaat” kata Akademisi Fakultas Pertanian, Universitas Warmadewa, Ni Luh Putu Putri Setianingsih, S.Si., M.Si yang juga merupakan Ketua Program Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat saat dikonfirmasi di Gianyar pada Senin (12/6).

Menurut Putri, metode pembuatan VCO kini telah berkembang seperti metode kering dan basah. Salah satu metode contohnya adalah membuat VCO tanpa pemanasan dan bahan kimia tambahan, sehingga kualitas VCO yang dihasilkan adalah yang terbaik. Pemanasan serta penambahan bahan kimia dapat mengubah struktur dan komposisi asam lemak yang terkandung dalam VCO yang dihasilkan.

“Oleh karena itu, dicari metode yang aman, murah dan mudah dalam teknik pembuatannya dan bisa diterapkan dalam skala rumah tangga” ujarnya.

Ia mengungkapkan VCO) belakangan menjadi popular dalam masyarakat, karena disebut-sebut memberi manfaat kesehatan. Mereka yang meyakini khasiat minyak kelapa asli percaya bahwa VCO dapat memperkuat imunitas, mencegah penyakit jantung bahkan dimensia. Minyak kelapa murni memiliki ciri-ciri antara lain berwarna bening dan berbau harum khas minyak kelapa serta mempunyai umur simpan sampai satu tahun.

Putri Setianingsih mengakui upaya sosialisasi pengolahan kelapa menjadi VCO telah dilakukan, salah satunya dengan melibatkan ibu-ibu PKK Merta Nadi Banjar Lantangidung, di Kabupaten Gianyar. VCO merupakan produk olahan dari daging kelapa dan bermanfaat bagi kesehatan tubuh manusia.

VCO sangat kaya dengan kandungan asam laurat (lauric acid) berkisar 50-70%. VCO diduga berpotensi sebagai antivirus dan anti bakteri sehingga dapat digunakan untuk melawan virus HIV penyebab penyakit AIDS. VCO adalah salah satu produk minyak kelapa yang saat ini mempunyai peluang pasar didalam dan diluar negeri. (Kanalbali/RLS)
